CBD SKINCARE - THE SCIENCE AND BENEFITS
There is already an abundance of research demonstrating the amazing health benefits that result from consuming CBD... but how does CBD work when applied topically?
Human skin is the body's largest organ - complex, multi-functional, and a protective barrier to the outside environment. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to help regulate homeostasis - helping improve the functioning of all cells and processes within the body. Specifically for the skin, the role of the ECS has been described below... "...the main physiological function of the cutaneous ECS is to constitutively control the proper and well-balanced proliferation, differentiation and survival, as well as immune competence and/or tolerance, of skin cells." www.researchgate.net/publication/26676110 Cannabidiol Receptors & The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) The endocannabinoid system is a signalling network that reacts to both cannabinoids produced naturally by the body, as well as by those from external sources, such as CBD products. |
The ECS relies on cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) to bind with the cannabinoids, allowing it to help regulate all of the body's functions - effectively, increasing optimization of the organism.
When the CB1 and CB2 receptors are stimulated, skin can become healthier and better nourished, often accompanied by a pleasant feeling of well-being.

The skin is comprised of 3 layers - epidermis, dermis, hypodermis. CBD receptors (CB1 and CB2) are present in all layers of the skin. "The many different cells contained in all three layers of skin work together in a complex, interconnected, delicately-balanced neuro-immuno-endocrine network that is regulated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Comprised of endogenous compounds that bind to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), which are expressed in all types of skin cells, the ECS engages in a homeostatic process called cutaneous cannabinoid signaling. This signaling mechanism promotes healthy skin renewal and barrier function." www.projectcbd.org |
When applied topically, the cannabinoids do not actually enter the bloodstream, as they only interact with receptors outside the blood-brain barrier. This means that even if the CBD cosmetics contain Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), no psychotropic effects will be experienced. (Note; all Raised Spirit organic CBD skincare products are THC-free).
CBD topicals offer consumers a simple and safe entry into exploring the wellness benefits of hemp plants. They also have the added advantage of allowing users to localize and directly target a specific area to help reduce inflammation.
Free Radicals & Oxidative Stress CBD has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant and a very effective free radical collector. This can help visibly reduce premature signs of ageing - such as wrinkles, skin opacity and uneven skin-tone. Sensitive Skin Owing to its well-known anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can reduce skin irritation and minimize sensitivity-related issues such as redness. The soothing properties of CBD can benefit all skin types, especially those that are subjected to multiple daily environmental stressors, and are vulnerable to eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis |
Anti-Inflammatory
"Inflammaging" is the scientific term given to the continuous, low-grade inflammation associated with aging. This can be reduced by using CBD, which is a natural, powerful anti-inflammatory compound. Studies have shown that the soothing and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD also have the potential to decrease the excess production of sebum, making this a key ingredient in the prevention and treatment of reactive and acne-prone skin. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are one of the main mechanisms behind the frequently reported pain-relieving benefits experienced by users.

Moisturizing
The hemp oil in Raised Spirit cosmetics is rich in Omegas 3, 6 and 9 and also a natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). These fatty acids are essential for preserving healthy skin. CBD stimulates the productions of collagen, and helps maintain the hydro-lipid balance in the epidermis - allowing the skin to stay fully hydrated. By sealing moisture in, the skin instantly looks and feels well hydrated, fresh and more youthful. FULL SPECTRUM VS ISOLATE A recent study by Italian scientists in Phytotherapy Research found that the anti-inflammatory effects of full-spectrum oil were far greater than using isolated CBD, indicating that other cannabinonids found in the hemp plant contribute to the inhibition of pro-inflammatory triggers in the skin. "The Italian team determined that the cannabis oil down-regulated several genes involved in wound healing and skin inflammation, whereas the anti-inflammatory effect conferred by the CBD isolate did not involve the same molecular mechanisms." This is important to understand when choosing what CBD product to use - always check the ingredients are "full spectrum", and avoid products that use isolates. |
DID YOU KNOW? Topical preparations of cannabinoids were used to treat various skin disorders in ancient China, Egypt, and the Arab world.
