HEMP POWER
Hemp is a fast-growing, low-impact crop that thrives on farms around the world, and has been used since at least 8,000BC to make clothes, feed people and much more. Environmentally friendly, sustainable and perfect for organic farming, hemp is now a popular crop in the UK. Hemp is frost tolerant, requires only moderate amounts of water, and requires no pesticides or herbicides, and only moderate amounts of fertiliser.
It’s important to know that hemp is not ‘marijuana’. Marijuana is a single species within the wider Cannabis Sativa family that has been artificially hybridised and cultivated. This means that hemp is genetically distinct from marijuana, and the kinds of hemp that are used for our CBD are legal to grow, and the products we sell do not contain the intoxicating compounds present in marijuana. |
Hemp can absorb 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare, making it one of the fastest CO2-to-biomass conversion tools available.
This makes hemp even more efficient at reducing CO2 levels than agro- forestry (combining agriculture and trees).

The Mighty Hemp Seed
Hemp seeds are highly nutritious and delicious, providing an excellent source of easily digestible protein, minerals, and dietary fibre. Hemp is the only plant that contains all of the essential fatty acids and amino acids required by the human body. These essential nutrients affect a variety of body functions, including metabolism, the skin, mood, behaviour, the brain, and the heart. Hemp seeds contain a protein that is more nutritious and economical to produce than soybean protein. |
Hemp seed protein can be used to produce virtually any product made from soybean: tofu, veggie burgers, butter, cheese, salad oils, ice cream, or milk. Hemp seed can also be ground into a nutritious flour that can be used to produce baked goods such as pasta, cookies and breads.
Nutrition and Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil has been dubbed ‘Nature's most perfectly balanced oil', due to the fact that it contains the perfectly balanced 3:1 ratio of Omega 6 (linoleic/LA) to Omega 3 (alpha-linolenic/LNA) essential fatty acids, determined to be the optimum requirement for long-term healthy human nutrition.
Hemp seed oil also provides an adequate supply of antioxidants (Vitamin E), carotene (precursor to Vitamin A), phytosterols, phospholipids and a number of minerals including calcium, magnesium, sulfur, potassium, phosphorus, along with modest amounts of iron and zinc and chlorophyll.
The Science Behind CBD Cannabidiol (CBD) is just one of over 85 cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Found in all mammals, the endocannabinoid system is made up of millions of cannabinoid receptor sites located primarily throughout the brain and central nervous system (CB1 receptors) and immune system (CB2 receptors) that act in neural communication. First discovered in the late 1980s, the endocannabinoid system regulates the body’s homeostasis, or general state of balance, impacting such functions as mood, sleep, appetite, hormone regulation, and pain and immune response. The ECS system is known to regulate: sleep, appetite, pain, pleasure, cognition, memory, visceral sensation, mood, growth, movement and immune function. |
We have put together another page detailing the latest science and research into CBD topical use, here.
TRUST IN NATURE To gain the maximum health benefits from the hemp plant, it is important to consume it as nature intended - in all of its glory. That means only using products that contain the full spectrum of cannabinoids, instead of opting for the cheaper and inferior "isolate" products. And make sure the hemp plants have been grown organically! |
Hemp Fibre Hemp fibres are one of the longest natural soft fibres, with eight times the tensile strength of cotton and four times the durability. They are also more absorbent, more mildew-resistant and better insulating than cotton. This sustainable super-plant grows very quickly (around 100 days) and is great for the environment - detoxifying the soil by removing harmful chemicals and pollutants, and enriches the soil with nitrogen and oxygen. Cotton, on the other hand, takes a tremendous toll on the soil and the cotton industry is currently responsible for more than 10% of the world's pesticides and nearly 25% of the insecticides. Cotton is one of the most thirsty crops, which depletes our limited freshwater supply. By contrast, hemp will produce around 2-3 times as much fibre per acre compared to cotton, and require only around a fifth of the water. Hemp textile breathes very well, offers UV protection, is naturally anti-bacterial, and best of all.... improves with use! |
Hemp Paper
- One acre of hemp (grown in approximately 120 days) yields as much paper as up to 4 acres of trees (which take many years to grow).
|
- In 1776, Thomas Jefferson, a hemp farmer, wrote the first two drafts of the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper.
Hemp Building Materials
Hemp structures date back to Roman times and can even be better-than-carbon-neutral. Hemp can be used to make walls, insulating floor slabs, ceilings, roof insulation and more.
• Non-toxic building material
• Naturally fire and pest-resistant
• Sustainable material choice
• Hemp blocks store heat in the thermal mass of its wall which is then released slowly as the building cools down
• The only building material that can remove carbon from the air
• Resistant against mold due to being moisture absorbent
• Combines insulation and thermal mass (heat store) within the same material – allowing for near constant temperatures, reducing the demand on heating or cooling systems

Hemp Fuel
Hemp biodiesel is a fuel made from the oil of hemp seeds and generates a significantly lower carbon footprint than any other biofuel option. It is an ester-based oxygenated fuel that can be used the same way as other diesel fuels, requiring no changes to the engine. Safe to transport and handle, hemp fuel replaces poisonous fumes with the pleasant smell of hemp when burned.
Hemp can also be turned into ethanol, which comes from the fermented stalk of the plant. It works in the same way as other ethanol fuels such as corn and soybean, although hemp fully matures much faster than these other vegetables and requires far less equipment and fertilizer when growing.
Whilst soybean and corn farming are depleting the earth and draining water sources, hemp farming actually cleans and renews the soil, and hemp crops can thrive in low-nutrient growing conditions.
- Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel that runs in any conventional, unmodified diesel engine
- Safe to handle and transport, and it can be stored anywhere that petroleum diesel fuel is stored
- Biodiesel is a proven fuel with over 30 million successful US road miles, and over 20 years of use in Europe
- Biodiesel is 11% oxygen by weight and contains no sulfur
- The use of biodiesel can extend the life of diesel engines because it's more lubricating than petroleum diesel fuel
